| Successful Job Hunting After Graduation |
|
Step one: self-analysis Of course you go to school and get a degree in what you think you want to do after you graduate but once you finally get to that point in life its still important to ask yourself, who am I, what are my skills, and what do I want? Sometimes people end up graduating just to graduate and end up having no interest in their field of expertise so it’s important to know who you are and what you are aiming for. Who am I? When asking yourself this question you should reply with answers that deal with your qualities. What are you good at, successful in, hobbies, things that excite you and so forth. What are my skills? When defining your skills look at the activities you have done throughout your life. For instance, you might have some experience working as an editor, so your skills would include writing, communication and working on a team. If you speak a second or third language it is an important skill to note. What do I want? What do you want in life reflects on matters such as what type of sector you would like to work for whether it be academic research, government, IT, industry, education, business, etc. Do you want to work where you live now, a different state or country? Are you looking to work in a business culture that is informal, formal, ambitious, social, corporate? What you want should go hand in hand with who you are and your skills. Step two: finding information After you complete your self-analysis, you will need information on several different topics. Once you find out where and who you want to work for you should take these next few items in mind. What are the labor conditions like? How do I apply for a job in my job destination? Do I need a work permit? What is the tax system like? These are particularly important if you are leaving the country to work however it is still also important to know these things so you have first hand knowledge as well as being prepared. Now that you know what type of job you want and the industry you want to work in, here are some tips to get you started on your job hunt! Search the Internet Check local newspapers Use your Career Resource Center on campus Network- talk with professors, friends of the family, old employers and so forth Send the company a letter to present yourself and explain to them that you are interested in working for the company and explain to them what you like about the company and what you can offer them. |
